General education teachers often experience tension between implementing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and providing individualized accommodations for students with disabilities. This interactive session introduces the “UDL wraparound” model—a three-part framework that combines UDL’s broad strategies for accessibility and engagement, targeted accommodations for specific learning needs, and long-term development of executive functioning skills. By using this model, educators can create more inclusive classrooms, streamline individualized supports, and foster greater student independence, self-regulation, and advocacy. Practical tools and real-world classroom examples will be shared to enhance inclusive teaching and more effectively meet the needs of diverse learners.

Accessing and understanding print—both in physical and digital formats—is essential for academic learning, independence, and social engagement. However, students with intellectual disability often face significant challenges in both reading comprehension and how it is assessed. This session will present current research on strategies to support comprehension and access to text, including the use of visual supports, structured discussions, and adapted materials. Participants will also explore how to adapt informal comprehension assessments to more accurately reflect students' understanding and guide their instruction. Practical examples and classroom tools will be shared to support implementation in diverse learning environments.

Teachers of students with disabilities take on multiple leadership roles beyond instruction, often from their first day on the job. These roles include managing classrooms, coordinating with colleagues, supervising educational assistants, maintaining home–school communication, and staying current with research and best practices, among others. This session introduces 12 essential professional activities that support instructional quality and teacher growth. For each area, participants will explore definitions, supporting research, self-assessment tools, and strategies for professional development. The session will also address both peer—teacher to teacher—and administrative supports to foster sustainable and impactful teacher leadership.
