Observational Assessment - How to Assess Effectively through Observation to Support Learning and Behavioural Management

The two-day course will review the principles of systematic observation, and define the parameters of observational assessment. Evidence-based features of observational assessment will be explored as well as the key attributes required in an observer.

Common observational tools such as frequency and duration recording, time-sampling and Behavioural Observation of Students in Schools will be covered with hands on practice, and discussion on when and how to use them. Participants will develop their own criteria (e.g., checklists, rubrics) for observational assessment based on skills and behaviours they wish to observe in their students. The relationship between observational assessment and formative assessment will also be explored through practical examples.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  • develop an understanding of the value of observation as a mode of authentic assessment, that may be fully integrated into learning and one that enables multiple assessment opportunities
  • be able to use different assessment instruments to record observations
  • apply observational assessment to a range of different learning contexts
  • use observational assessment as a mode of formative assessment

Target Audience:

  • Teachers from special education schools (SPED), Special Educational Needs Officers.
  • Mainstream teachers working with students with SEN, teachers with an interest in “alternative” assessment
