Spatial Competency and Literacy for Educators

The Spatial Competency and Literacy for Educators program comprises five modules (outlined below), delivered through a blended format of online and face-to-face sessions across two school terms by Associate Professor Marian Mahat and her team of lecturers. Each module explores key theories and concepts, presents relevant case studies, and highlights practical strategies for implementation. The program integrates direct instruction, whole-group discussions, and collaborative breakout activities. A key feature of the program is the embedded micro-inquiry to support reflective practice. Through this approach, participants will develop a robust understanding of current research and learn how to harness the pedagogical and design dimensions of innovative learning environments to improve student outcomes.

  • Module 1 – Why space matters: Understanding the rationale for school learning environments. This masterclass workshop focuses on policy initiatives and research evidence that have driven the design of school learning environments globally.
  • Module 2 – Teaching and learning in innovative spaces. This masterclass workshop focuses on the purposeful alignment between a school’s educational vision, the design of its learning environments, and everyday teaching practices that can amplify the impact of innovation.
  • Module 3 – Student engagement in innovative spaces. This masterclass workshop focuses on how the physical design of learning spaces influences student psychosocial outcomes such as wellbeing, engagement, as well as social and emotional learning.
  • Module 4 – Teacher collaboration in innovative spaces. This masterclass workshop explores the diverse forms and benefits of teacher collaboration, with a focus on how collaborative practices can be enhanced and sustained within innovative spaces.
  • Module 5 – Evaluation and scaling up of innovative spaces. This masterclass workshop focuses on formal evaluation methods and practitioner-inquiry in school learning environments, as well as processes and strategies for scaling up.
