Let Every Child Thrive: Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a flexible teaching framework used by many preschool educators to make learning more engaging, accessible, inclusive and effective for a diversity of young learners. Rather than expecting young learners to adapt to a single teaching approach, UDL encourages educators to design learning experiences that recognise differences in abilities, backgrounds, interests, needs and learning preferences.

Through hands-on activities and generative conversations, participants in this full day workshop will learn how to

• Remove barriers to learning by anticipating learners’ diverse needs when lessons are designed.
• Improve accessibility and participation, giving more learners meaningful opportunities to engage and succeed.
• Promote inclusion, diversity and equity by recognising that learners differ in their strengths, cultures, experiences and needs.
• Support individual differences through flexible teaching approaches rather than relying on a single traditional method.
• Build on learners’ strengths and interests, allowing teachers to use what they know about learners to make learning more relevant and engaging.
• Provide different ways for learners to access, participate in and demonstrate learning.
• Benefit all learners, not only those with disabilities or additional learning needs.

UDL shifts the focus from “How do we help this learner fit the lesson?” to “How can we design the lesson so that more learners can access, engage with and succeed in it from the outset?”.   In essence, UDL can let every child thrive.
