Managing Programmes for Students with Developmental, Behavioural and Learning Challenges

This one-day workshop will focus on the different staff roles that partner Special Education Needs Officers in supporting students. The different strengths and expertise of each role (e.g., Discipline Masters, Counsellors, Year Heads, Staff Developers) and how they can be effectively integrated will be explored in the light of recent research findings.  The development and enhancement of authentic inclusiveness will be discussed in terms of evidence-based strategies. Participants will also be provided with a practical template to assess, maximize and enhance current practices in their school. Participants will be invited to share the challenges they face so that practical solutions can be identified.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  • develop a working knowledge and understanding of the distinctive characteristics of common developmental and learning disabilities, and common misconceptions
  • differentiate between “cannot do” and “will not do” in students
  • co-plan strategies to support students that utilize and integrate the expertise of different staff members
  • maximize the effectiveness of Multi-tiered systems of support using evidence-informed strategies

  • Counsellors, Heads of Student Leadership and Management, Key Personnel, Year Heads, School Staff Developers
  • Staff working and partnering with Special Educational Needs Officers.

About the Presenter: 

Mr Simon Reynolds

Mr Simon Reynolds is a Senior Consultant at Principals Academy with expertise in curriculum development and implementation, pedagogy and assessment and special education. He was a deputy director at the Curriculum Planning and Development Division of the Ministry of Education for 11 years working on curriculum development and effective curriculum implementation through appropriate pedagogy and assessment. Currently, he consults on curriculum design, assessment, and evaluation for Special Education Schools, conducts teacher and parent training for mainstream schools and is as a part-time lecturer and practicum supervisor at the National Institute of Education. He also works on behavioural management and intervention. When time permits, he occasionally returns to the classroom as a relief teacher to keep connected to classroom realities. Mr Reynolds holds Masters Degrees in English Studies and Autism Studies and a Graduate Certificate in Behavioral Analysis.
