Strategies for Navigating Challenging Conversations

This workshop will look at different common scenarios in which difficult conversations can occur: with parents/caregivers; colleagues; authority figures; and members of the public. Strategies covered will include the importance of knowing boundaries and non-negotiables; the importance of listening; de-escalation; managing anger in others and one’s own anxiety; nurturing mutual respect; the importance of depersonalised information; knowing what actions you can take – and what actions you cannot. Bring about a closure and meaningful follow-up. Participants will be expected to share their concerns, challenges and successes, and role-play different scenarios.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Recognize and navigate common scenarios for difficult conversations across various relationships.
• Implement strategies such as setting boundaries, active listening, de-escalation, and managing emotions.
• Achieve meaningful conclusions and follow-ups in challenging dialogues, incorporating role-play insights.
