Leading from the Middle

Strengthening Strategic Leadership for Key Personnel

Key Personnel in schools play a pivotal role in translating school priorities into purposeful action. As middle leaders, they are expected to lead teams, support implementation, manage relationships across the organisation, and ensure that plans are carried through effectively on the ground. This requires not only sound execution, but also the ability to lead with clarity, exercise judgement, and navigate complexity in a dynamic school environment.

This practical 1-day workshop is designed to strengthen the leadership effectiveness of Key Personnel, particularly Heads of Department and other middle leaders, by focusing on three important dimensions of middle leadership: leading self, leading conversations, and leading within systems. Through structured reflection, practical tools, and application to authentic school-based situations, participants will deepen their understanding of their leadership role and strengthen their ability to act with greater purpose and coherence.

Areas Covered:

  • Being Mindful and Self-Aware
  • Communicating Strategically
  • Thinking and Acting Systemically

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • clarify the leadership role of Key Personnel in linking school direction with departmental implementation
  • identify personal behavioural patterns, triggers, and assumptions that influence leadership practice
  • use practical tools to analyse workplace situations from a broader school-system perspective
  • apply structured approaches to professional conversations with staff, peers, and senior leaders
  • examine school-based leadership challenges and identify more intentional responses for action

Key Competencies: What Will Participants Gain From This?

Participants will strengthen their ability to:

  • exercise greater self-awareness and professional judgement in leadership situations
  • communicate with greater tact, clarity, and influence across different levels of the organisation
  • navigate complexity with a more connected and systemic mindset
  • build alignment across teams while balancing departmental and whole-school priorities
  • lead from the middle with greater confidence, maturity, and purpose‍
