Microsoft Copilot for Educators

Workshop overview and outline

One-day practical workshop

Microsoft Copilot for Educators

Plan, create and adapt learning with confidence

One-day practical workshop for teachers and education professionals

01

Workshop overview

This practical workshop helps educators use Microsoft Copilot as a dependable partner for preparing teaching and learning resources. Participants work from one authentic unit, topic or learner need, create one source-backed classroom resource, and then choose one meaningful extension. The day emphasises what to make, how to make it and how to review it before classroom use.

Outcome

Each participant leaves with one reusable Copilot workflow, one classroom-ready core resource, one chosen extension and a dated next-use plan.

Audience and positioning

  • Teachers, lecturers, Education Officers, instructional designers and school leaders with teaching responsibilities.
  • Suitable for mixed subject areas, learner levels and levels of Copilot experience.
  • This is not a broad tour of every Copilot feature, and it is not a lesson-design theory course. It is a guided production day focused on useful educator work.

Access and licence assumptions

The workshop uses a licence-aware design. The core route works through Microsoft Copilot Chat with a work or school account and supplied sample materials. Enhanced activities use whichever capabilities the host has enabled, including Teach, Copilot Notebooks, Word, PowerPoint and Forms. Feature availability must be confirmed before delivery.

NAMING NOTEMicrosoft is transitioning product naming from Microsoft 365 Copilot to Microsoft Copilot. Some licences, interfaces and support materials may continue to use the earlier name during the transition.

02

Learning outcomes

By the end of the day, participants will be able to:

  1. Select an appropriate Copilot experience for a teaching task, based on purpose, available sources and institutional access.
  2. Give Copilot a clear brief containing the task, audience, source material and expected output.
  3. Create and refine a source-backed teaching resource using Copilot Chat or Teach.
  4. Use one Copilot pathway to differentiate content, create an assessment resource, or develop learner study support.
  5. Review AI-assisted materials for accuracy, curriculum alignment, inclusivity, accessibility and appropriate learner use.
  6. Save and reuse a transparent workflow containing the brief, sources, output and human revisions.

03

Workshop design

ONE AUTHENTIC PROJECT

Participants use a real teaching need throughout the day rather than completing disconnected exercises.

DEMONSTRATE, BUILD, REVIEW

Short transparent demonstrations are followed by protected creation time and focused human review.

CONTROLLED CHOICE

Everyone follows the same workflow, while the afternoon output reflects individual teaching priorities.

HUMAN ACCOUNTABILITY

Copilot drafts and transforms. The educator checks evidence, appropriateness and final use.

Proposed one-day agenda

09:30 to 10:30Give Copilot a useful briefUse four plain-language questions: What should it do? Who is it for? What should it use? What should the output look like? Compare and improve an initial response.
10:30 to 10:45Morning breakStep away from the screen.

16:35 to 17:00Share and plan the next useShow selected outputs, capture reusable practices and commit to one dated classroom use.

05

Demonstration and activity spine

  1. 1

    Brief the work clearly

The facilitator shows a weak request, asks Copilot to identify missing information, then constructs a usable brief around one teaching problem. Participants repeat the process for their own topic.

  2. 2

    Create the classroom-ready core

Using trusted source material, participants create one teaching resource such as an explanation, activity guide, lesson resource or worked example. The emphasis is on usefulness and clarity rather than volume.

  3. 3

    Choose one extension

Differentiate: adapt language, reading level, scaffolding or challenge while preserving the intended learning.

Assess: create a short quiz, rubric or feedback resource grounded in the same content.

Support study: create flashcards, a study guide, practice questions or a concise visual explanation.

  4. 4

    Review and improve

Participants exchange work and use four questions: Is it accurate? Does it fit the intended learning? Is it inclusive and accessible? Is it ready for the learner to use? Each participant makes one visible improvement.

  5. 5

    Save the workflow

Participants package the brief, sources, Copilot output and human revision so the process can be repeated for another topic rather than disappearing into chat history.

06

Participant outputs

  • A reusable four-question Copilot brief.
  • One source-backed classroom resource.
  • One chosen extension for differentiation, assessment or learner study support.
  • A short review record showing what the educator changed and why.
  • A 30-day classroom-use commitment.

07

Copilot capabilities used

Core capability: Microsoft Copilot Chat. Education and application extensions are selected according to the host tenant and participant licences.

  • Teach in the Microsoft Copilot app: lesson plans, quizzes, rubrics, flashcards and content modification, where enabled.
  • Copilot Notebooks and Study Guide: source-grounded summaries, topic pages and learning activities, where enabled.
  • Word and PowerPoint: document and presentation creation or refinement, where licensed.
  • Forms: editable quiz creation through supported education workflows.

Responsible-use boundaries

  • Do not enter identifiable learner information unless explicitly permitted by institutional policy and system controls.
  • Check all important facts, citations, curriculum references and examples against authoritative sources.
  • Use Copilot to support professional judgement, not to make high-stakes decisions about learners.
  • Review outputs for bias, accessibility, copyright and age appropriateness before classroom use.

Participant preparation

  1. Bring a laptop and sign in to the institutional Microsoft account before arrival.
  2. Bring one non-sensitive topic, unit or teaching resource to work on.
  3. Confirm access to Copilot Chat and any enabled education or Microsoft 365 features.
  4. Use supplied sample materials if personal or institutional content cannot be uploaded.

AI in Education Professional Development Series

Empowering Educators to Teach, Learn, and Lead inthe Age of Artificial Intelligence

Overview

This AI in Education Professional Learning Series is a cohesive set of one-day professional development workshops created in partnership between the Principals Academy and Dr Jim Wagstaff, co-founder of Noodle Factory and author of AI-Assisted Teaching and Learning: A Generative AI Field Guide for Educators. Each workshop focuses on a different dimension of AI’s role in teaching and learning — from foundational understanding to advanced integration and future readiness.

Designed for teachers across subject areas, these workshops balance academic rigour with classroom practicality. Participants will explore hands-on applications of AI, learn to evaluate and adapt digital tools responsibly, and build confidence in aligning AI use with sound pedagogical frameworks such as R.A.T., KAT, and Constructive Alignment. Every session blends demonstration, discussion, and design-based activities to ensure that teachers leave with actionable strategies ready for immediate classroom application.

The series supports the MOE’s broader vision for ethical, effective, and future-ready use of technology in schools — equipping educators to lead innovation, enhance inclusivity, and improve learning outcomes through thoughtful use of AI.
