Quiet Influence: Persuasion Through Rapport and Language

Quiet Influence

Persuasion Through Rapport and Language

Course overview

Some people change others' minds without appearing to try, and the mechanisms are largely learnable. This programme covers them.

Participants learn to establish rapport quickly and deliberately, using matching of pace, language and frame of reference rather than superficial mimicry, and to recognise when rapport is present and when it has been lost. They then work on the language patterns that move a position: presuppositions that make agreement easier, reframing that changes what a situation means without disputing the facts, and the sequencing that leads a person to a conclusion rather than presenting it to them.

The applications are professional throughout, including bringing a colleague around on a departmental change and shifting a parent's position without confrontation. The programme addresses ethics substantively rather than in passing, since these techniques function irrespective of whether the influencer is right, and participants examine where the boundary of legitimate influence sits.

Extensive practice with observation.
