Building Healthy Assessment Systems: From Assessment Fundamentals to System-Level Change

Workshop

Building Healthy Assessment Systems

From Assessment Fundamentals to System-Level Change

Description

Healthy assessment systems begin with a clear understanding of why we assess, what we assess, and how assessment evidence should be used. This workshop provides participants with a foundation in core principles and purposes of educational assessment, examining the relationships among assessment for learning, assessment as learning, and assessment of learning. Participants will explore key assessment concepts—including validity, reliability, fairness, alignment, and the appropriate use and interpretation of assessment evidence—and consider how different assessment purposes require different approaches. The workshop then moves from classroom practice to the system level, examining how assessment policies and professional learning shape the assessment culture in classrooms.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop, teachers will be able to:

  1. 01Explain core principles of high-quality assessment and distinguish among different purposes and uses of assessment.
  2. 02Evaluate the alignment, validity, fairness, and appropriateness of assessment practices in relation to their intended purposes.
  3. 03Analyze how policies, accountability structures, organizational cultures, and professional capacity influence assessment practice across educational systems.
  4. 04Identify strategies for leading coherent, sustainable assessment reform and change at the school, organizational, or system level.

Key Competencies

Assessment Literacy
Critical Evaluation of Assessment Practice
Systems Thinking and Change Leadership in Assessment
