Following a poll to establish participants’ experiences and views of AI tools, the workshop will open with an overview of the nature and development of AI, its implications for education, and current challenges and debates. A range of representative AI tools will be introduced, with participants invited to explore one or more which they have not previously experienced. An overview of AI literacy development strategies will follow, after which participants will be invited to work in subject-oriented groups to design one or more lesson plans for students’ AI literacy development. The workshop will conclude with a sharing of ideas across subject areas.

About Dr Mark Pegrum
Mark Pegrum is a professor in the Graduate School of Education at The University of Western Australia, where he is the Deputy Head of School (International), with responsibility for overseeing offshore programmes and international connections. In his courses, he specialises in digital technologies in education, with a particular focus on mobile learning. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and his teaching has been recognised through Faculty and University Excellence in Teaching Awards, as well as a 2010 national Australian Learning & Teaching Council (ALTC) Excellence in Teaching Award. His current research focuses on digital literacies and especially attentional literacy; mobile and emerging technologies, including extended reality (XR); and the forms digital learning takes in diverse contexts across the Global North and South. His books include: Brave New Classrooms: Democratic Education and the Internet, co-edited with Joe Lockard, and published by Peter Lang in 2007; From Blogs to Bombs: The Future of Digital Technologies in Education, published by UWA Publishing in 2009; Digital Literacies, co-authored with Gavin Dudeney and Nicky Hockly, and published by Pearson in 2013; Mobile Learning: Languages, Literacies and Cultures, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2014; Mobile Lenses on Learning: Languages and Literacies on the Move, published by Springer in 2019; and Digital Literacies (2nd edition), co-authored with Nicky Hockly and Gavin Dudeney, and published by Routledge in 2022. He currently teaches in Perth and Singapore, and has given presentations and run seminars on e-learning in some 30 countries.
About Dr Grace Oakley
Grace Oakley is an associate professor at the Graduate School of Education at The University of Western Australia. She has been a teacher educator since 2000, with a particular interest in language and literacy in the Early Childhood and Primary years and the use of ICTs in language and literacy education. She is also interested in innovative teaching practices in Higher Education. Prior to working in Higher Education, Grace qualified and worked as a Primary School teacher in Western Australia. Grace supervises a number of research students, and is especially interested in supervising students in the areas of literacy and educational technology.
