Positive Discipline

Traditionally, discipline might have been to manage misbehaviour by meting out consequences. However, often there is no recourse for wrongdoing, or students end up feeling resentful or guilty. The premise of Positive Discipline, however, is "connection before correction" i.e. in order to empower young people to shift their behaviour, we first form a relationship and then empower them to take responsibility for their actions in a respectful, kind and firm way.

Key Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Understand the 5 criteria of Positive Discipline
  • Understand the mistaken goals of student behaviour
  • Learn practical and effective tools to discipline more positively in their department and across the levels

Target Audience: Key Personnel and School Leaders

Key takeaways from the workshop:

  • Improved questioning: Learn to ask better motivational and conversational questions to engage students effectively.
  • Re-framing mindset: Focus on identifying students' needs instead of addressing behaviour directly, and recognize the presence of mistaken goals.
  • Self-reflection: Develop a new perspective and approach for handling students with discipline issues by examining your own beliefs and assumptions.
  • Workshop structure: The workshop offers a well-structured introduction to positive education and alternative ways of addressing classroom issues.
  • Comprehensive strategies: Gain a wide range of strategies for promoting positive discipline, supported by practical case studies.
  • Uncovering beliefs: Understand the underlying beliefs that cause misbehaviour and apply the concept of mistaken goals to teach students values and proper habits more effectively.
  • Constructive engagement: Discover more meaningful and constructive ways to engage students in building their discipline.
  • Discipline terminology: Learn new terms and concepts to describe my work as a Discipline Master and better understand my beliefs towards discipline.
